Health and Safety comment:
Judicial report: Prior to race one during trials there was an unfortunate accident and injury to an unamed dog trained by Mr S Maher.
Whilst this dog was trialling another dog PAYNE ZONE had escaped from the trailer of R Udy and had run through the front of the stand and forced the gate to the birdcage open and ran over to the greyhound track and caused the unamed greyhound to get caught on the lure and suffer a large laceration on right side of his thorax.
The vet Mr Boyce attended to the dogs injury ,then it was moved away to MASSEY UNIVERSITY for further treatment.
Trainer R Udy was questioned regarding the dog escaping with only a collar on.
The dog had been transferred to his trailer from Trainer P Freeman earlier on in the morning and the door was properly closed according to R Udy.
The stewards investigated the trailer when helping to return the dog to the trailer and found that the dog had forced the door open to the trailer and was able to squeeze through and get away.
PAYNE ZONE did not receive any injuries in this incident
The rest of the trailer was checked and all doors and latches found to be in good condition and working order.
PAYNE ZONE was able to force the gate to the birdcage open when he galloped in to it head first and this gate has a good catch on it
After due consideration and in view of the extraordinary circumstances of the dog escaping from the trailer the stewards took no further action against trainer R Udy
