Track Conditions:
Stewards inspected the track in accordance with their pre meeting procedures and determined that the track condition was at least slow and verging on heavy. Prior to pre meeting trials being conducted extremely heavy rain had fallen which caused a significant amount of water to enter the already slow track surface which was consequently discussed with the Track Manager. Several pre- meeting trials were run without any additional track related concerns and improving weather conditions. The Track Manager then proceeded to prepare the track surface for the 10 race programme ahead.
Several verbal complaints were received by Stewards and the Club from Trainers in relation to the condition of the track with race times varying from 31.54sec to 31.29sec for 527 mtrs between Races 1 and 5 and Race 3 a 318 mtr event was run in 18.39 sec.
As a result of continuous monitoring it became clear that the track was 'holding' more water than usual and although the weather and race times were improving slightly there would be no significant improvement in the actual track surface / condition on the night.
Following Race 5 the Stewards chose to address the matter further with all interested parties and an on-track meeting was called which included the Track Manager, several Trainers, Veterinary Officials and Club Management. The sharing of concerns, opinions and recommended track maintenance tactics were aired and resulted in the AGRC officials undertaking to consider relevant track maintenance issues with particular emphasis on the closeness to raceday of power harrowing, use of the track water sprinkler system and the extent of track surface rolling / equipment required.
The meeting was beneficial in terms of dealing with an important issue faced by the AGRC on the day and their desire and willingness to accept input from the group gathered was appreciated.
It should be noted that at no time did the Stewards consider that the track condition was unsafe in terms of animal welfare and nor was the race meeting in jeopardy of not proceeding. In addition two race related injuries were reported to the Stewards for the entire programme and these could not be directly related to the track conditions.
