Stipendiary Stewards Report

Auckland Greyhound Racing Club

Manukau Stadium ON SATURDAY 20 Aug 2005

Weather:
Track: Good Firm
Scales: Correct at all weights
Health and Safety comment:

Judicial report: Weather: Fine Prior to Race 1 further discussion took place with the Club Electrician, Club President, Club Judicial Steward / Committee and Starter and the decision was made to revert to fully automatic starts from the 527 mtr distance. This decision was reached on the basis that extensive testing had been conducted using the automatic triggering system since the malfunctions at the 31.07.05 and 03.08.05 race meetings without reoccurrence.
*************
The Swabbing Steward and Veterinary Surgeon were reminded by the Club Judicial Steward of the required prior notice (allocated time) to be given to Trainers / Handlers with greyhounds to be swabbed pre-race.
*************
Race 4. Following the running of this race concerns were expressed by Trainer, R.P.O'Regan (Lesson In Life) and Owner J.R.Nixon (Sea Master) in relation to the lure being pushed back around the track by the greyhounds for approximately 20 mtrs from where it had initially stopped at the end of the race. The Stipendiary Steward questioned the relieving Lure Driver ( T.A.Green) about the matter and his explanation was noted. Mr Green was requested to ensure that the full 'braking system' options are applied in future in order to prevent the lure being able to be moved forward or backward after it has come to a halt at the end of a race.
*************
Race 9. Following the final race on the programme, Owner J.R.Nixon (Certainly), lodged an official complaint with the Stipendiary Steward regarding the distance of the lure (driven by T.A.Green) in relation to the leading greyhound during Race 9 and in particular whilst in the back straight ( alleged more than seven metres) and near the finishing line (alleged less than five metres). The video replay was reviewed and although the back straight coverage did not, in the Stipendiary Steward's opinion, provide any evidence due to the fact that the actual lure position could not be seen in that section of the video coverage, it was evident that the leading greyhound and winner Miss Tonsberg, did get closer to the lure than the required five metres at the point where the lure crossed the finishing line. Rule 304.1 states that 'it shall be the aim of the Lure Driver to take the lure and maintain it at a distance of not less than five metres nor more than seven metres from the leading greyhound at all times during the running of the race'. The video review did not indicate that the leading greyhound Miss Tonsberg, nor any other runner, slowed down or changed stride as a result of the lure position during the race. Miss Tonsberg's winning margin was 4 1/4 lengths.
As a result of the official complaint received and subsequent review of the race, the matter was referred to the AGRC Judicial Committee (N.McGough) who opened and adjourned an inquiry.

George Tooman was the relieving Judge for the race meeting.
