Judicial report: Weather: Overcast The Judicial Committee hearing into a charge laid by the Stipendiary Steward under Rule 135.1 against trainer K. Walsh was reconvened prior to Race 1. Evidence was heard from several witnesses. K.Walsh was represented by legal counsel who also made a written submission to the Committee. The Judicial Committee (Mr A Booth) reserved his decision.
A full investigation will be conducted by the Waikato GRC into the malfunction of the starting boxes in Races' 5 and 7.
In Race 5, the boxes failed to open and the race was rerun 6 minutes later. It is thought that a power surge just prior to the race start may have caused this malfunction.
In Race 7, one end of the boxes released while the other end did not initially but did so several seconds later causing an 'unfair start' to eventuate. The runners did compete over the entire distance of the race and given the uncertainty as to the complexity of the malfuntion as well, the decision was made to declare Race 7 a 'No Race'. The Club had a new hydraulic starting box mechanism installed on 11.12.04 which is likely to be the focus of the investigation. This mechanism was disengaged for the remaining 3 races on the programme and the boxes functioned normally.

Our Shereena ran off the rail on the bend and came together with King Of Dreams which also hampered Basil Faulty. Shezmy Scallywag cut across the heels and checked Our Shereena on the home turn which in turn forced King Of Dreams and Basil Faulty wide.
Race 2 MATANGI MAIDEN STAKES - C0 - 457 Baltasar missed the start by 2 lengths. Gentle Lee, Thrilling Steve and Hurricane Hove came together after the start and again 10mtrs later. Race 4 DINSDALE DASH - C2/3 - 375 Someone was boxed first due to a current 'hard to box' categorisation. Thrilling Jack was slow to begin. Sue Van Gill came across towards the rail on the first turn inconveniencing Bankside Bella which then drifted to the rear and stayed there throughout.
Race 5 CLUB HOUSE CAFE & SPORTS STAKES - C1 - 457 The boxes failed to open, a false start was declared and then the runners were unloaded for inspection and to allow for testing of the boxes and triggering mechanism. It is thought that this malfunction may have been caused by a power surge just prior to the start of the race. The equipment was considered operational and the field was reboxed. This race started 6 minutes late. Thrilling Merc was slow to begin. Bozo Fulton drifted on the bend forcing Tartare Sauce which was racing behind it to lose ground.
Race 6 SUPERIOR GREYHOUND FORMULA STAKES - C4 - 457 Gold Strike was scratched due to injury. Winsome Mate and Ballibeast were slow to begin. Winsome Mate ran out on the first turn and came together with Fancy Joe. Fancy Joe was tightened and checked between Lindale Express and Winsome Mate on the first bend. Race 7 FOND FOODS WAIKATO CUP - C5 - 457 This race was declared a 'No Race' by the Judicial Committee (A Booth) and Stipendiary Steward in consultation with the Starter and other Officials, due to the boxes not opening normally and causing major disruption to the race and varying degrees of 'denied a fair start' to several runners. All runners completed the course and a rerun was considered not appropriate given the distance the runners had travelled and the uncertainty as to the complexity of the equipment malfunction.
Race 8 FESTIVE SEASON STAKES - C4/5 - 457 Idol Appeal underwent a 'Hard to Box' reassessment and was boxed in the normal drawn sequence. This was subsequently considered to be satisfactory by the Starter, Judicial Steward and Stipendiary Steward. Romberg Reason was slightly slow to begin.
