Stipendiary Stewards Report

Auckland Greyhound Racing Club

Manukau Stadium ON FRIDAY 03 Sep 2004

Weather:
Track: Good Firm
Scales: Correct at all weights
Health and Safety comment:

Judicial report: Weather: Fine The AGRC introduced a photofinish backup camera at todays meeting which was well received by all officials involved.
The handler of World Priority (S.C.Mann) advised that the trainer's name in the racebook for this greyhound remains incorrect. The trainer is M.P.Mann and not R.J.Mann (Wellington) as printed. The Stipendiary Steward conveyed this information to the NZGRA prior to the commencement of the meeting for checking and correction.
Race 1. Trainer C.A.Symes incurred an automatic $100 fine under Rule 269.3 for the unacceptable 2.1kg weight variance of this greyhound Heza Scallywag upon presentation for kennelling.
Race 8. The trainer of Stallone (G. Calverley ) was questioned regarding the inconsistent race form of this greyhound. Mr Calverley stated that he believes it is related to whether the greyhound begins well at the start of its races and if it can secure a run handy to the lead then it is inclined to perform better. If it begins slowly and gets back in the field then it does not show as much determination. He also stated that possibly the greyhound is racing up to its maximum ability in this grade at this time. His explanation was accepted.
Race 12. The trainer of Astro Doll (P.Green) and part owner ( B.McGhie) requested to view a replay of this race and discussed the performance of their greyhound, and a comment passed by the Race Caller during his commentary in relation to Astro Doll running out into the back straight.
No Judicial involvement was considered warranted following the race based on the Stipendiary Steward's viewing and interpretation of the running of the race which was several minutes prior to the request by Messrs Green and McGhie to view the replay. This decision was reached based on usual viewing and post race replaying of the race at least three times and an all clear status conveyed to him by the officiating Track Steward. It is also relevant to mention that there is no audio provision on the video monitor available to the Stipendiary Steward at the AGRC, and therefore he is not necessarily or immediately aware of verbal comments made during the race commentaries. This provides both advantages and disadvantages however it is important that those acting in a Judicial capacity are not influenced by any comments made by Race Callers, when assessing and determining if any Judicial matter is to result from the running of a race, therefore no audio provision is in fact, usually desirable. Having now heard the full commentary of Race 12 from todays meeting and reviewed the running of the race again several times, frame by frame, I stand by my original interpretation of the race which is stated in the relevant Race Incident report above. In addition, although the Race Caller did make mention of the incident in question during his commentary and again in his post race wrap up, I do not consider that his comments were specifically stating that Astro Doll had committed any offence under the rules. It is therefore not my intention to pursue this matter further.
