Judicial report: Weather: Overcast cool conditions. A charge under Rule 322 (1) (b) was preferred against CHALLENGER BALE and Trainer AC Roberts following the running of the West Australia Distance. Roberts pleaded not guilty to the charge and after hearing the evidence from the Starter and viewing the race film, the Judicial Steward found the charge not proven.
A charge under Rule 172 against Trainer GA Cleeve adjourned on 8 April 2004 was reconvened. It was established that WEAR THE FERN who was entered for the Rockcote Stakes on 8 April 2004, was inelligible to compete having previously been stood down undfer Rule 322. After hearing the evidence, the Judicial Officer dismissed the charge on the basis it could not be clearly established where the mistake had been made, either by Cleeve or the NZGRA. Systems were being put in place to ensure there was no re occurence.
A charge under Rule 256 against Trainer AH Lee and dog SOFA LOAFER who was scratched from the West Australia Distance was opened and adjourned pending further inquiries.

Race 1 PEDIGREE ADVANCE SPRINT - C2 - 295 MELTING POT drifted to last soon after jumping from the boxes. Into the first corner the favourite JANE'S COMMANDO checked off the hindquarters of HOMEBUSH LEO as he drove to the lead, running away to win the event easily. JANE'S COMMANDO recovered well to finish third. Soon after this incident DR SCHMACHER, MELTING POT and FAST AND FIT came together when racing in the body of the field, losing all chance.
Race 2 WILSONS SPORTS BAR SPRINT - C2 - 295 The short priced favourite HOMEBUSH MICK and JEMALONG BRUISER were slow to jump from the boxes. Into the first corner HOMEBUSH MICK improved, coming in contact with MAY WELL BE, both dogs losing further ground. They along with JEMALONG BRUISER never recovered, filling the last three places. TAR SEAL (JV Busch) split toenail right hind. Veterinary certificate supplied. Rule 259. 10 days up to and including 6 May 2004.
Race 3 BOWL AND JACK TAVERN STAKES - C1 - 520 WAVE THE FERN was slow to jump from the outside box, settling last, however ran on strongly over the concluding stages for third. Into the first corner AQUA TANK and MR MUG came together, losing momentum as the favourite CAWBOURNE PAT drove to the lead from his outside draw. BROKEN TITLE who was trailing these dogs, ran wide to avoid the skirmish. CAWBOURNE PAT ran away to win the event easily, BROKEN TITLE and AQUA TANK finishing mid field with MR MUG last.
Race 4 GREYHOUND RACING A/ASIA STAKES - C3 - 520 Soon after the jump QUEZON CITY was tightened between DR DUDLEY and WAR TOKEN, losing all chance finishing a distant last. He was checked by the Club Veterinarian who detected nothing amiss. The short priced favourite THRILLING FLOYD was slow to jump from the boxes and raced in tightened quarters into the first corner, before checking outwards to chase the second favourite WAR TOKEN, running that dog down over the concluding stages of the event. KELLBRETT JEMMA and HAPPY GIGGLE were checked when tightened into the first corner, settling beyond mid field. At the end of the back straight an improving KELLBRETT JEMMA came together with MEGA BYTES, these dogs losing momentum finishing near the rear of the field.
Race 5 WEST AUSTRALIA DISTANCE - C1/2d - 732 The second favourite CHALLENGER BALE walked out of the boxes, settling a distant last, running on strongly over the concluding stages for fourth. A charge under Rule 322 (1) (b) was preferred against CHALLENGER BALE and Trainer AC Roberts, he electing to plead not guilty to the charge. After hearing the evidence the charge was found not proven by the Judicial Officer SOFA LOAFER(AH Lee) no vet certificate received. Rule 256. 30 days up to and including 29 May 2004.
Race 6 NEW SOUTH WALES SPRINT - C3 - 295 Into the first corner HOMEBUSH DEEJAY was tightened losing ground with SPECIAL HAND and GUNNADOO LASS runing wide to avoid the skirmish. These dogs filled the last three places.
Race 7 GOBIS CLUB BONUS SERIES FINAL - RESf - 520 TUDOR QUEEN was slow to jump from the outside box, however improved around the field into the first corner. The favourite BANKSIDE BRAT ran outwards coming in contact with HOT RED MINI and SATIN ANGEL, all three losing ground. BANKSIDE BRAT ran on for fourth, with the others dogs at the rear.
Race 8 VICTORIA SPRINT - C5 - 295 GEOFFREY CRAYON was tightened soon after jumping from the boxes by dogs on his outer, settling last. Into the first corner BUBBA'S HAND struck the hindquarters of FAITHFUL WHISKY, drifting back throught the field, forcing ROTKARA BOMBER and an improving GEOFFREY CRAYON wide on the track. These dogs never recovered finishing amongst the tail enders. AWESOME PAUL drove to the lead into the first corner, running away to win the event easily.
Race 9 CANBERRA STAKES - C3/4 - 520 DR ABERNATHY settled last on jumping from the boxes, improving through the field to finish strongly in the straight for third. Into the first corner FERRIS BALE and the second favourite USER FRIENDLY came together for a number of strides, both dogs losing momentum finishing mid field.
Race 10 QUEENSLAND STAKES - C2 - 520 Into the first corner CALM DREAMER and TUKI AQUA were checked as a result of general tightening. TUKI AQUA ran on for a fast finishing fourth with CALM DREAMER finishing last.
Race 11 NEW ZEALAND STAKES - C2 - 520 Into the first corner the second favourite NIL DEFECTS was tightened between dogs losing all chance settling last and never improving in the running. She was checked by the Club Veterinarian who detected nothing amiss. CHICA and JETSET TOKEN also lost ground as a result of the incident, finishing beyond mid field.
Race 12 SOUTH AUSTRALIA SPRINT - C4 - 295 FLIGHTY jumped to the lead on leaving the boxes, before being run down in the shadows of the post by HOMEBUSH WILLY. The favourite KNOCKABOUT FRED settled last but finished on in the straight to finish mid field. BEST HAND (Adcock/Hopping) cut pad left fore. Dog presented. Veterinary certificate supplied. Rule 259. 10 days up to and including 7 May 2004.
