Race 3 MILLER BAR & CAFE STAKES - C3 - 520 Into the first corner HERE'S FREDDY and the favourite TONY ROME came together, both dogs losing momentum, settling well back. Into the back straight SEASPRAY PADERO and WHISKY'S TOKEN came together briefly, WHISKY'S TOKEN pulling up instantly as a result and taking no further part in the event. TINKERS TOSS who raced outside the leader and eventual winner SPEED TWIN, ran wide down the back straight losing some ground, however held on to finish a clear second. WHISKY'S TOKEN was checked by the Club Veterinarian and found to have a fractured right hock, recommending a stand down period of 28 days. A long lure was observed at the start of the race, inquiries with the Starter and Stewards revealing that the lids appeared not to activate immediately the lure passed the sensor on the running rail, but soon afterwards. After viewing the race film the payment of dividends was declared. WHISKY'S TOKEN (JT McInerney) Rule 329. 28 days up to and including 4 December 2003.
Race 4 RAPID VITE NZ STAKES - C2 - 520 The favourite BANKSIDE BRAT jumped clear from the outside box, driving to the lead by the first corner running away to win the event easily. Race 5 GEORGE CALVERT CLEANERS GALAXY HEAT 1 - C5q - 295 Heat 1 Into the first corner NICHOLAS BALE and ROTKARA BOMBER came together, losing ground and coming back on HOMEBUSH WILLY and BRADANCAS. HOMEBUSH WILLY finished on in the straight wide out for third, with the other dogs finishing towards the rear of the field. A long lure was reported by stewards for this race, and again the lids did not activate as the lure passed over the sensor on the running rail, but soon afterwards. The circumstances appeared identical to those experienced in the earlier race from the 520m start. After viewing the race film the payment of dividends was authorised. Following this event the Club Electrician checked both the 295m and 520m boxes, reporting that batteries at both boxes were fully charged. His only explanation was that given the extreme nor west winds being experienced during the afternoon, there was the possibility of dust and sand affecting the solenoids in each set of boxes. Manual starts were performed for the balance of races at the meeting.
Race 6 GEORGE CALVERT CLEANERS GALAXY HEAT 4 - C5q - 295 Heat 1 Into the first corner LIGHTENING LIGHT, SHEEZA FREE and the second favourite THELMA BALE were checked as NOVEMBER BEAR crossed down towards the rail from his outside draw. The never recovered from this incident, filling the last three places. HURRICANE DEL (JV Busch) torn gracilus muscle. Rule 257. 30 days up to and including 5 December 2003.
Race 7 WILSONS SPORTS BAR NZ CUP HEAT 1 - C5q - 520 Heat 1 The second favourite SOME JOE and MARSHA BALE were slow to jump from the boxes, settling at the rear of the field. SOME JOE ran on strongly for third with MARSHA BALE finishing second to last. BURALI BALE (AC Roberts) torn gracilus muscle. Rule 257. 30 days up to and including 5 December 2003.
Race 8 WILSONS SPORTS BAR NZ CUP HEAT 2 - C5q - 520 Heat 1 Into the first corner the favourite POWER WITHIN, PADDY POWER and the second favourite EGYPTIAN GOLD came together. As a result SPOTTED HAND, PADDY POWER and HONEST BIRD ran wide. EGYPTIAN GOLD endeavoured to improve along the rail around the bend and into the back straight, before colliding with the hindquarters of DAPHNE BALE, who was forced outwards into the path of SPOTTED HAND, POWER WITHIN and HONEST BIRD. These dogs never recovered, finishing beyond mid field. PADDY POWER who was checked into the first corner tailed the field throughout the event.
Race 9 WILSONS SPORTS BAR NZ CUP HEAT 3 - C5q - 520 Heat 1 Into the first corner GEOFFREY CRAYON checked out off the hindquarters of KERCHAK, running wide around the bend taking DR ABERNATHY and BULLMAN BALE with him. DR ABERNATHY ran on strongly in the home straight to finish third. The other two dogs came together at the end of the back straight, running wide and losing further ground. They filled the last two places.
Race 10 WILSONS SPORTS BAR NZ CUP HEAT 4 - C5q - 520 Heat 1 GROOVY JEWEL was slow to jump from the boxes settling a clear last, never improving during the running. Into the first corner the second favourite TRENDY RHODE and CHANTILLY BALE came together both dogs losing ground. They never improved finishing near the rear of the field.
Race 11 GEORGE CALVERT CLEANERS GALAXY HEAT 3 - C5q - 295 Heat 1 Around the first corner DREAM ON GIRL drifted out to a clear last when racing near the rear of the field, finishing the event some considerable distance behind the field. Into the home straight the second favourite BLACK ALLEGRO checked out off the hindquarters of ASTON MARSHAL, losing momentum. These dogs finished near the rear of the field. DREAM ON GIRL was checked by the Club Veterinarian who found her to have fractured a hock recommending a 28 day stand down period. DREAM ON GIRL (M & J Jopson) Rule 329. 28 days uo to and including 4 December 2003.
Race 12 GEORGE CALVERT CLEANERS GALAXY HEAT 4 - C5q - 295 Heat 1 The starter reported that this race commenced when the sensor activated the box lids as the lure passed, and prior to the starter activating a manual start. A review of the race film showed the lure to be at the rear of the boxes as the lids activated with the lure moving clear of the dogs. Payment of dividends was authorised after viewing the race film. There was on the night a serious problem with both the 295m and 520m boxes, which follows on from a series of similar but not identical incidents with the boxes at three of the four previous race days. The Club CEO has been requested to have both sets of boxes fully examined both mechanically and electrically as well as tested prior to the next meeting, which features the NZ Cup Final and Galaxy Final. A separate report on the boxes has been forwarded to the Chief Executive Officer, Wellington.
