2019 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS **UPDATED*

Greyhound Clubs Australia conducts the National Sprint and Distance Championships annually.

The events are marketed as “The Nationals” and feature finals over the distances in the vicinity of 500m and 700m. Heats and Finals are staged in each State with the Grand Final rotating from State to State each year. In 2018 the Grand Finals were held at Sandown Park, Melbourne, Victoria.

Both the National Sprint Championship and the National Distance Championship carry a first prize of $75,000 and both events are classified as Group 1 events.

The 2019 Championships will be held in Perth, Western Australia. Greyhounds WA stepped forward a year from 2020 after 2019 host New South Wales were unable to stage the events. 

A major change for 2019 will be the inclusion of a finalist from New Zealand. It’s the first time in the event’s history and makes the finals a Trans Tasman event

The Grand Finals will be held at Cannington on Saturday the 24th of August, they will be preceded by a Welcome Cocktail Party at Fraser’s Kings Park and a Greyhound Stakeholder Symposium on Thursday 22nd of August. Plus Meetings / Gap Conference and the Nationals Award Dinner on Friday the 23rd of August.

2019 NATIONAL MIDDLE DISTANCE AND DISTANCE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES GREYHOUND CLUBS NEW ZEALAND CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

The 2019 National Championships series is conducted under the auspices of Greyhound Clubs New Zealand. The trainer understands and agrees to be bound by the following conditions and commits to participating in the Australian Grand Final.

1. QUALIFYING RACES Subject to the following conditions, and to the relevant Rules of Racing, the following Clubs will conduct races to determine the greyhounds who qualify for races to be known as The New Zealand National Middle Distance and Distance Championship Series”:

Northern Region Auckland Greyhound Racing Club (Manukau Stadium) Southern Region Christchurch Greyhound Racing Club (Addington Raceway) Southern Region Otago Greyhound Racing Club (Forbury Park Raceway) Central Region Wanganui Greyhound Racing Club (Hatrick Raceway)

Each club will run no more than four qualifying heats for middle distance races and The distance races will be run as straight semi-finals and selection for these races will be based on the Christchurch selection criteria.

Heats will be selected based on individual club criteria and GRNZ has the right to determine the number of heats staged based on the number of nominations.

2. ELIGIBILITY TO ENTER

  • ‘Nomination Closing Date’ will be determined by GRNZ entries will only be accepted for races in which are in the same location as the kennel base of the greyhound i.e. Northern region greyhound will be allowed to qualify at any of the races in the Northern or Southern Regions
  • The Trainer is responsible for nominating the greyhound to compete in a qualifying race in all circumstances.
  • Nominations must be lodged with GRNZ per normal nominations.
  • Entries must comply with the GRNZ Rules of Racing 
  • A greyhound is eligible to be nominated for a qualifying race must be domiciled in New Zealand for at least 6 months immediately preceding the entry closing date. 
  • A greyhound shall be deemed to be domiciled in a particular district commencing on the date on which the change of kennel notification form is received by GRNZ up to but excluding the date upon which that form is subsequently received by GRNZ. 
  • Where a greyhound was domiciled in any district in which a qualifying race is to be conducted for a period of less than 2 Months immediately prior to the Nomination Closing Date, it will only be eligible to be nominated for a qualifying race in that district only. 
  • Even though a greyhound may be eligible to be nominated for, or to compete in a qualifying race, the club conducting the qualifying race is not obliged to accept an enter for the greyhound to compete in the qualifying race. 
  • If a greyhound is ineligible to compete in the qualifying race, GRNZ must notify its connections prior to the Nomination Closing Date. If a greyhound is ineligible, the owner/trainer and the district or GRNZ will agree on an alternative district where the greyhound would be eligible. The entry must then be made to the club or GRNZ responsible for the alternative venue. The owner/trainer is responsible for notifying the relevant club or GRNZ that they intend to nominate their greyhound for a qualifying race.
  • Nominations must be made before the normal closing time and date for enters.

 



3. THE NEW ZEALAND NATIONAL FINAL The New Zealand National Finals are conducted by the Club selected by GRNZ The 2019 New Zealand National Finals will be conducted by the Christchurch Greyhound Racing Club, Addington Raceway.

The field for the 2019 New Zealand National Finals will comprise:

  1. Maximum of four qualifying heats will be run by each district for middle distance. If there are four heats for middle distance, then the first placings of each heat will go through to the semi-finals. If there are three heats for middle distance, the first placings of all three heats will go through to the semi-finals. The fourth place will go to the fastest time out of the three 2nd placings, if times are identical or for any other reason can’t be split, then they will be drawn from a ballot. If there are only two heats, then only the first and second placings in each heat will go through to the semi-finals. If there is only one heat, then the first four placings will go through to the semi-finals. The distance races will comprise of a maximum of two heats per club. If there are two heats for distance race, then the first placings of each heat will go through to the semi-finals. If there is only one heat for distance race, then the first and second placings will go through to the semi-finals. Semi-finals for the middle distance will be run over four heats, with the top 2 placings from each heat advancing to the New Zealand National Finals, 08 August 2019, Addington Raceway. Semi-finals for the distance races will be run over two heats, with the top four placings advancing through to the New Zealand Nationals Finals, 08 August 2019, Addington Raceway.
  2. ii. The two winners of the respective NZ Finals New Zealand National Finals – Christchurch Greyhound Raceway Club, Addington Raceway, will form part of the Australian Grand Final field for 2019.
  3. Two greyhounds who are classified as reserves, will be the two fastest third placing dogs from the respective middle distance semi-finals and the two fastest fifth placing dogs from the respective distance semi-finals. Reserves may only be drawn from greyhounds who ran in the semi-final races conducted by a Club/GRNZ as referred to in Clause 1.
  4. In the event of two greyhounds being in equal finishing position/time, a ballot will be used to determine the representative.

4. DISQUALIFICATION AND PROHIBITION

i. The club or GRNZ conducting the New Zealand National Finals is not obliged to include a greyhound in the New Zealand National Finals if the greyhound has been disqualified or prohibited from racing or has become in any other way ineligible as at the time and date on which the draw is conducted for the meeting at which the New Zealand National Finals will be held. In the event that a greyhound who qualified for the New Zealand National Final is disqualified or prohibited or for any other reason deemed ineligible to race before the draw is undertaken, the greyhound will be excluded from the draw. The greyhound may be replaced by another greyhound selected by GRNZ . ii. If one of the greyhounds drawn in the New Zealand National Final is disqualified or prohibited from racing or becomes otherwise ineligible to race after the draw for the New Zealand National Final has been published, it will be withdrawn from the New Zealand National Final and replaced by one of the available reserves.

5. DISTANCES GRNZ will determine the distances over which the New Zealand Nationals Finals will be contested, taking into account the race venue and the rules which apply to that venue.

6. DEAD HEATS If a dead heat occurs in a qualifying race referred to in Clause 1, GRNZ will determine which greyhound(s) has/have qualified to progress to the New Zealand National Finals in accordance with GRNZ 33.2 R33.2 Dead Heat Where Two or more Greyhounds Dead-Heat for first place or a minor placing in a Race comprising Heats and/or Semi Finals the right of the Greyhound concerned to further participate in such Race shall, where necessary, be decided by ballot.

7. SELECTION OF QUALIFIER  If a No Race is declared for a race in which district representation is determined, REFER TO GRNZ RULES of RACING

8. POSTPONEMENT, TRANSFER OR CANCELLATION The Club/GRNZ conducting any qualifying race may postpone, transfer to another venue or cancel any race under its control. No liability will arise from postponing, transferring or cancelling a race.

9. LATE WITHDRAWAL In the event of any greyhound being withdrawn without a valid reason after the draw has been published for any race that forms part of the New Zealand Nationals, the greyhound may be liable for a penalty, in accordance with the GRNZ Rules.

10. RULES Qualifying races, Semi-Finals and New Zealand National Finals will be conducted in accordance with the GRNZ Rules. In the event that any matter arising is not provided for in the relevant Rules or in these conditions, the matter will be determined by GRNZ in conjunction with the RIU.

11. PROMOTIONAL ACTIVITIES Connections of greyhounds qualifying for the New Zealand National Finals may be required to assist the Association, host organisation and/or sponsors of the event with publicity and promotional activities. Connections are expected to participate co-operatively in any publicity and promotional activities as required.

12. INTERNATIONAL REPRESENTATION WITHDRAWAL In the event that the winner of the New Zealand Nationals is unable to attend the Australian Grand Finals, the second placed greyhound of the New Zealand Nationals will be promoted to represent New Zealand at the Grand Finals in Perth, Australia on the 24th August 2019.

13. TRAVEL SUBSIDY Each of the dogs traveling (representatives)will receive a generous subsidy towards flights and associated costs.
