Judicial report: Weather: Fine but cold OLD MONARO (GA Cleeve) breach of Rule 269 (3). Trainer GA Cleeve fined $100.00.
An enquiry into the eligibility of SHIRAZ ROYALE (PD Freeman) to compete in Race 8 The New Zealand Community Trust Distance was opened under Rule 377 (5). Freeman elected to plead not guilty and after hearing the evidence, the Judicial Steward made the ruling that SHIRAZ ROYALE was ineligible to compete and was therefore a late scratching. Due to the circumstances, no financial penalty was imposed on Freeman.
The hearing under Rule 349 (1) against Denis Schofield adjourned on 19 May 2004 was reconvened. He elected to plead guilty to the charge and after viewing evidence from swabbing steward N Thackwell the Judicial Steward imposed a fine of $200.00.

Race 1 PAL MEATY BITES SPRINT - C2 - 295 WAG raced three wide near the lead, until the home straight before drifting out and coming in contact with CYPRESS LAKES. These dogs lost all chance, filling the last two places.
Race 2 WHISKA'S STAKES - C1/2 - 520 BROKEN TITLE settled last on jumping from the boxes, running on during the middle stages to finish fourth. Into the first corner CHEAP WINE, DUCHESS FERN and DR NOAKES ran wide, losing ground finishing amongst the tail enders. Near the end of the back straight ULTIMATE MOVER faultered when racing outside the leader and eventual winner THRILLING MAY. He drifted out finishing a distant last and was checked following the event by the Club Veterinarian who found a torn right shoulder muscle. A 21 days stand down was recommended. AQUA TANK (JR Goode) lacerated left foreleg. Veterinary certificate supplied. Rule 259. 10 days up to and including 4 June 2004. ULTIMATE MOVER (MM Grant) torn right shoulder muscle. Rule 329. 21 days up to and including 16 June 2004.
Race 3 DINE PETITE GOLD SPRINT - C3 - 295 Soon after jumping from the boxes BOY RACER was squeezed between dogs, losing all chance finishing last.
Race 4 SCHMACKO'S STAKES - C3 - 520 The short priced favourite CAWBOURNE PAT was tightened between dogs into the first corner, however obtained a passage soon after to improve up behind the leader at the end of the back straight. Across the top he moved inside the leader RANDOM HARVEST before turning outwards and fighting that dog. He ran on strongly over the concluding stages for second, with RANDOM HARVEST finishing fourth after losing ground as a result of the interference. A charge under Rule 322 (1) (a) was preferred against CAWBOURNE PAT and Trainer JT McInerney. He elected to plead guilty to the charge, with CAWBOURNE PAT stood down for a period of 3 months up to and including 26 August 2004. OZZY JOHN was checked following the event by the Club Veterinarian and found to have torn out a left hand toenail, recommending a stand down period of 14 days. OZZY JOHN (BC Dann) left hind toenail torn out. Rule 329. 14 days up to and including 9 June 2004. CAWBOURNE PAT (JT McInerney) Rule 322(1)(a). 3 months up to and including 26 August 2004 and to undertake a satisfactory trial in accordance with Rule 179.
Race 5 OPTIMUM DOG ROLL STAKES - C1/2 - 520 Into the first corner TULONGA LOAFER and RAZOR ROBERTSON eased as a result of tightening, setteling mid field. Into the back straight TULONGA LOAFER checked out off RAZOR ROBERTSON'S heels, checking the favourite BANKSIDE BRONCO. RAZOR ROBERTSON ran on well for third, with the other dogs finishing amongst the tail enders. TUKI AQUA (JT McInerney) diarrhoea. Dog presented. Veterinary certificate supplied. Rule 259. 5 days up to and including 31 May 2004.
Race 6 BARRON'S SUPPLIES SPRINT - C4 - 295 The favourite SHEEZA FREE was very slow to leave the boxes, losing all chance finishing second to last. HOMEBUSH KAYCEE (JT McInerney) diarrhoea. Dog presented. Veterinary certificate supplied. Rule 259. 5 days up to and including 31 May 2004. OLD MONARO (GA Cleeve) was a late scratching at kennelling when weighing in 1.7kgs under his last race start weight. Rule 269(3). Trainer Cleeve fined $100.00.
Race 7 PEDIGREE ADVANCE SOUTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL - C5f - 520 THRILLING FLOYD was very slow to jump from the boxes, settling a distant last. He improved during the event, finishing strongly in the straight for second. The favourite SWIFT APPEAL drove to the lead into the first corner, running away to win the event easily. Into the first corner FASHION THIEF struck the hindquarters of TOKENISM, both dogs coming back on GEOFFREY CRAYON. They never recovered from the incident, finishing at the rear of the field.
Race 8 NEW ZEALAND COMMUNITY TRUST DISTANCE - C2d - 732 Into the first corner AQUA HOBO was AQUA GOOFY eased as a result of general tightening, settling well back, finishing some distance behind the place getters. SHIRAZ ROYALE (PB Freeman) was a late scratching after an inquiry determined a breach of Rule 377(5).
Race 9 WHISKETTES STAKES - C4/5 - 520 This event was put back 2 minutes to 10:02pm due to a false start in the preceeding trotting event. The favourite EGYPTIAN GOLD and PRIVATE BEN eased when tightened into the first corner, settling well back and finishing amongst the tail enders.
Race 10 THE MILLER BAR & CAFE SPRINT - C5 - 295 Into the first corner GILBERT BALE was checked as a result of general tightening, coming back on HOMEBUSH WILLY, these dogs finishing mid field. GRAND MOVER (MM Grant) diarrhoea. Dog presented. Veterinary certificate supplied. Rule 259. 5 days up to and including 31 May 2004.
