Wanganui Racing Update - 2

As many will be aware, Hatrick Raceway was closed on 23 September 2021 amid track safety concerns.

Since then, GRNZ has engaged a range of experts to report on the viability of rebuilding the track, safely, practically and economically.

As a result of these reports, the GRNZ Board unanimously voted last month to renovate Hatrick Raceway.

They also unanimously voted to construct a straight track on the adjoining Wanganui thoroughbred racecourse, the details of which are currently being worked through with the Wanganui Jockey Club and the Racecourse Trustees.

Building a straight track was a key recommendation in both the 2017 Hansen Report and the 2021 Robertson Review. Owing to the fact there are no corners on straight tracks, where the majority of collisions and injuries occur on circular tracks, these types of tracks are safer for our short-course sprinters.

We also need to be mindful of providing local racing opportunities for greyhounds who run over longer distances, which was one of the deciding factors in electing to renovate the existing Hatrick Raceway as well. We also consider that Friday night greyhound racing at Hatrick Raceway holds an important place in the Wanganui community.

We will endeavour to keep everyone updated as these track projects progress.
