Wanganui Racing Update

Hi everyone,

As you will be aware, Hatrick Raceway has been closed since 23 September 2021 amid track safety concerns.

Since then, Greyhound Racing New Zealand has engaged a number of world-leading track authorities to assess the various options and provide recommendations around greyhound racing in Wanganui.

In making their recommendations, the experts considered a range of factors, with the primary focus being on track safety. Economic viability was also examined, and the possibility of constructing a straight track was also explored.

After receiving the experts’ reports, the GRNZ Board met earlier this week and unanimously voted to renovate Hatrick Raceway.

Additionally, the GRNZ Board unanimously voted to construct a straight track adjacent to Hatrick Raceway, on the adjoining thoroughbred racecourse.

Both the 2021 Robertson Review and the 2017 Hansen Report recommended the introduction of straight tracks in New Zealand, and it is anticipated that this new straight track will result in a reduction of injuries, especially those of a serious nature, based on overseas research conducted around straight tracks.

Construction of the straight track and the renovation of Hatrick Raceway will commence in the near future.
