Federal Morgan Cruises to Hatrick Classic Title

A massive day for owner Scott Eaton culminated in Federal Morgan taking out the $30,000 Group 1 Hatrick Classic at Whanganui Raceway on Friday night. Eaton owned three winners on the night after earlier victories on the 12 race card with Federal Ranger who went a best on night 29.81s, and Jilliby Litsa who also cracked the 30-second barrier once again. Federal Morgan held a perfect line on the nights first group race, and was too strong for Lisa Cole trained kennel mates Big Time Lantao and Bigtime Brie.

The Australian based Eaton has a handful of very nice dogs based at Lisa Cole’s Palmerston North kennels. Eaton has his own small breeding operation where the dogs who come from there are given the name Jilliby. Fittingly Eaton’s friend Morgan runs Federal Park down the road to accommodate extra pups for rearing, and they keep the Federal first name. Federal Morgan was at flip of the coin odds to carry on from his scintillating Heat win in the time of 29.58s. Big Time Lantao and Big Time Brie as expected jostled for the early lead before the bigger Lantao took over going down the back straight. Federal Morgan had positioned himself into third, and looked the winner a long way from home. Morgan ranged up outside Lantao on the final corner and powered away late in the piece registering a time of 29.89s for the 520m. Lantao and Brie held down second and third making it a kennel trifecta for Lisa Cole.

The second feature on the night was the Group 1 Whanganui Distance also running for a stake of $30,000. Last weeks heat winners Bronski Beat for Lisa Cole and Shaynee for Sam Lozell were expected to be on the early pace for Friday’s final. Bronski Beat flew past Mr Blackjack for the early lead putting a big space on his rivals with a lap to go, the margin began to close heading towards the corner on the final occasion as Shaynee lobbed herself into a nice trailing position.

Shaynee hooked underneath a tiring Bronski Beat and raced away with an easy victory in the finish. Gem for Jean and Dave Fahey and owner Mark Lin finished on gallantly into second while the same training combination prepared the third placegetter in Mr Blackjack. Sam Lozell has now trained two Group 1 winners after taking out the 2019 Spion Rose with He’s All Shine. He has also lined up the same dog to run second to Trojan Hoarse in the 2020 Galaxy Sprint Final over 295m, and Shooter’s Hill to a Silver Collar second behind Dyna Weslyn at Group One level in 2019. The Ate To Much Just as Gentle litter Lozell reared also look to have a tonne of ability with Just As Much making the Hatrick Classic Final after a limited amount of middle-distance starts. Littermates Beau Beau, Hot Little Nancy, Just Olive, Rhodes Worthy, and Entree Only have all won multiple races across the country.
