Hoarse Cashes In During Friday’s Huge Hatrick Meeting

Hoarse Cashes In During Friday’s Huge Hatrick Meeting

It sure was a sublime evening of greyhound racing at the Hatrick Raceway on Friday evening where just under $150,000 in stakes was won by the classy chasers who contested the quality 12 race card. Here’s a look back at the races that supported the feature Group 1 $46,000 Accell Therapy Spion Rose 520m race (reviewed separately).

Winning the break in any short course sprint race is half of the winning formula. The Lisa Cole prepared Trojan Hoarse did precisely that when he powered away from the five trap, resulting in his strong pace making win in the $16,000 Wanganui Toyota Dash For Cash 305m sprint at Group 2 level.

Trojan Hoarse was never seriously challenged with his freewheeling sprinting action carrying him to his reasonably easy third career Group race title by a 2.5 length margin, clocking a tidy personal best 17.28s time.

Both the prerace favourites made mistakes at the jump. Trojan Horase’s kennelmate Sir Duggie, who returned the quickest time (17.36s) from the five heats contested the previous Friday, scrambled for traction for a couple of strides when he came off the matts. The $2.60 race favourite Buddy Boom came away from the traps a tad on the slow side.

However, the recent Group 1 295m The Fitz Sports Bar Galaxy Sprint winner Buddy Boom quickly pushed forward for his conditioners Jared Udy and Denise Cottam, getting himself handy to the pace when he found a rail’s racing possie. He set off with purpose after the pacemaker when rounding the turn, which led to his sound second placing.

The winner’s kennel and littermate Cheese And Chalk displayed great track sense which enabled him to get up for his third placing 7.5 lengths behind his brother. He found himself caught in early midfield traffic from where he extradited himself from when he spotted a gap enabling him to cut down onto the rail from where he extended to claim his podium placing.

Trojan Hoarse was a finalist for the recent 2018-19 GRNZ Greyhound of the Year title after his Group 1 victories in the New Zealand Derby (457m) and the New Zealand Breeders’ Stakes (520m). The versatility that this Craig Rendle owned son of Fernando Bale and Ocotillo owns was clearly illustrated by him winning the third highest ranked short course sprint in the country.

“We’re really rapt with Trojan who is going super – he jumped brilliantly and that was all he needed to do to win the Dash For Cash. Once he was in front, he was never going to be caught by the others. That was also top race from his brother Cheese And Chalk. Their mother Ocotillo has been prolific brood bitch producer for Craig (Rendle),” advised Brendon Cole.

Trojan Hoarse has been an ultra-consistent sprinter since he was reverted back to short course sprinting. He looks certain to further expand on the $128,528 career stake earnings he has so far gathered, the result of his 23 wins and 29 minor placings from his 77 race day outings.

$12,000 NZRS Distance Final

The Kiwi bred stayers were loaded away into the Hatrick 755m traps to chase after bonus Breeder’s dollars for their respective breeders. Classy Witch placed herself handy to the early pace for her conditioner Gary Cleeve. That proved to be the winning tactic as she initially stalked the early pace-setting Crackling Gal from the Jared Udy and Denise Cottam kennels.

The regular attendee in these types of races Goldstar Sydney for Steve and Bonnie Evans also positioned herself into a handy early position. The Dave and Jean Fahey trained $1.50 race favourite Opawa Hilary made a mistake at trap rise and she settled back in the field from where she angled her way down to her favoured rails racing passage.

Classy Witch took control of this 755m staying test after completing a full lap and from there she never looked like flinching as she kicked clear to land her feature staying victory when returning her handy 45.10s clock.

Opawa Hilary (Barcia Bale – Opawa Michelle) finished solidly along the rail to snatch the runners up prize off a gallant Goldstar Sydney (Know Peace – Notable Fantasy) when making it an all Canterbury bred, owned and trained finish by a neck margin.

Classy Witch has been a very consistent greyhound for her owners and breeders Gary Cleeve and his partner Gaylene Turnwald. It was a thoroughly deserved feature race win for this daughter of Know Class and Know Witch (both of whom were outstanding stayers during their racing careers). She has now raced on 73 occasions, winning 12 of those and has placed in a further 19 races from her 73 career races with her stake earning now sitting at $37,133 (excluding Breeders bonus payments).

Friday Hatrick Support Races

Seve is just one of several quality greyhounds that the emerging Canterbury trainer Daniel Lane is currently preparing and his charge stylishly handled his first crack at C2 racing, plus also his Hatrick track debut when he controlled the pace throughout to win the opening $7,860 Udy – Cottam Racing  Kennels C2 feature. He completed his 520m assignment in 30.58s.

The first of four training successes for the nation’s leading trainer Lisa Cole during the meeting came in the country’s richest Maiden race when Big Time Brie prevailed in the $7,390 Dave and Jean Fahey CO final. This pint-sized 22.7kg chaser led her rivals all the way when landing her comfortable 7.25 length win in a tidy 30.30s. She will quickly add to that judging by her effortless win in this event.

The $7,505 Collegiate Quality Inn Wanganui C1 Final was billed as the clash between a pair of talented Angela Turnwald trained kennel mates and that’s exactly how this 520m feature event turned out. The promising Boy’s Get Paid seized the race lead when entering the back straight, while his kennel mate Meandering tucked himself just behind in his slipstream to stalk him. Both greyhounds are owned by syndicates and it the K Brady & J Dogs Syndicate owned Meandering who got up late by a neck margin over his gallant Boys Get Paid And Some Syndicate owned Boys Get Paid, posting 30.43s for his gallop.

Seve impressed when winning the opening Friday C2 520m event; Wendy Kite and Ella Cole are with the winner of New Zealand’s richest Maiden race Big Time Brie; it was an ecstatic group of owners who welcomed back their charge Meandering to the podium following his strong feature C1 520m win

It was the Cole team to the fore again when Bigtime Tank gamely dug deep into his reserves to initially claim the pacemaker, then fend off a solid late challenge that was thrown at end by half a length in 30.39s when he annexed the $8,326 Red Snapper Seafoods Christchurch C3 feature over 520m.

Canterbury trainer Craig Roberts had brought north Oster Bale to deliver a smart track debut 30.09s C3 520m win the previous Friday. The rise in class that this fella faced in his $9,030 Kernow Construction C4 Feature certainly didn’t faze him as seen when he strode to his impressive 30.16s 520m win by a 3.25 length margin. He can feature in open class racing that he will now step up into.

It was a Cole mentored quinella in the main open class support 520m event. Bigtime Brodie was never seriously challenged when he controlled the pace throughout when cruising to his 30.12s win in the $9,730 Monster Fish @ Stud C5 feature 520m event. His kennel mate, the ultra-consistent Bigtime Levi put in his usual big late bounds for his second placing 5.5 lengths behind.

Bigtime Tank was bold when he claimed his C3 520m feature win as was Oster Bale who stylishly won his C4 520m feature race; Sammy Phillips returned the C5 feature race winner Bigtime Brodie to the podium

Former GRNZ President John McArthur has been enjoying 305m sprinting success with Fifi who he bred and trains. On Friday evening he stepped her up to 520m racing where she came with a sustained finishing burst to cut back the Cole prepared pace making Bigtime Kiss by 1.75 lengths in a handy 30.19s. It was the biggest career win for Fifi in the $8,095 Allegro Gun @ Stud Wanganui Oaks R/A feature event.

The $8,095 R/A Thrilling Boris @ Stud Wanganui Darby also over 520m was next up which saw the exciting up and coming chaser Opawa Toddy prepared by Dave and Jean Fahey cutting clear to take out this feature by a convincing six lengths. The Opawa Racing bred and owned chaser clocked a rather tidy 30.06s for his assignment.

It sure was a very competitive field of stayers who paraded to the 645m traps to contest the final race Goldstar Kennels Christchurch C2D feature. The event certainly turned into a ripper of a paw wrestle which saw the Turnwald prepared Hot Platter outstay her rivals when she landed her strong 38.26s win when easing clear by a 2.5 length margin for her owing The Bookie and Them Syndicate.

John McArthur was rapt with the feature 520m win that Fifi delivered; Opawa Toddy maintained the stylish start he has made to his racing career via his strong Friday 30.06s 520m win – he’s seen here with his co-trainer Dave Fahey and handler Katie Wyllie; Hot Platter was sighted at the podium following her 645m win with Kevin Brady (left), trainer Angela Turnwald, Paul Freeman and the visiting Sky Racing Catching Pen co-host Jason Lincoln
