Rehoming and Fees Update

As of 1st October, the GRNZ Great Mates Programme officially launched in all 3 rehoming kennel locations across the country (Levin, Cambridge and Rangiora).

Great Mates is now responsible for the assessment and retraining of greyhounds that are retiring as pets, and will be responsible for all greyhounds until they have been found a new home by one of our rehoming partners - GAP or Nightrave.

GRNZ has built kennel facilities in Levin, and has contracted kennels and staff in Cambridge and Rangiora to significantly increase our rehoming capacity. We will ultimately be able to rehome the retired greyhounds more quickly and reduce wait times for greyhounds coming into the programme.

A $60 entry fee will apply for each greyhound coming into the rehoming programme, and we will provide an all-inclusive service for the greyhound to ensure it has the best possible chance of finding the perfect new home. This includes:

  • De-sexing
  • Vet checks
  • Dental care
  • Temperament assessment and behaviour modification as required done by trained kennel staff
  • Dogs that need extra training will receive specialised training from Nightrave
  • Great Mates Prison Programme for some

A reminder that dogs must be up to date with all vaccinations and registered with the council when entering into the rehoming programme; an $80 fee will apply for greyhound that do not meet either criteria and $160 if the dog does not meet both criteria, to cover these additional costs.

Since we started our transitional period in August, we have adopted more than 100 greyhounds into new homes. Our rehoming rates are continuing to increase now that we are fully operational.

We appreciate your patience in the transition and thank you for your support with participation in this programme, it is important we all ensure your greyhounds get a wonderful life after their racing career and go to good homes.
