Dave & Hilary to Represent NZ in Aussie Nationals

Dyna Dave and Opawa Hilary will represent New Zealand greyhound racing when they travel to Perth to contest the Australian Nationals finals on August 24 over 520m and 715m respectively. Both greyhounds become the inaugural Kiwi representatives to race in the A$75,000 to the winner finals at Group 1 level after winning the New Zealand finals at the Addington Raceway.

It was a full on evening of quality Thursday evening trans-Tasman greyhound racing with Australian Nationals finals being decided in six Australian states.

Dyna Dave displayed brilliant track sense when he came from an early rear field position to powerfully run away to easily win the Christchurch GRC hosted $50,000 NZ Nationals Middle Distance final. It was an emphatic performance by this Craig Roberts prepared and Brenden Wheeler owned greyhound who clocked 30.16s for his assignment.

“Rapt – I wouldn’t trade Dave for any other greyhound in the final,” enthused Craig Roberts on Friday morning. “He came through the race as good as gold. He’s a real beauty – I thought I would never get a better 520m greyhound than Dyna Vikkers – Dave is. He had to be good to win that. He was in tight quarters on the first turn, then for him to get himself into clear racing room and to bring it home as strongly as he did was really super.

“I’m currently working through the procedures and protocols to get him over there. I’m looking to fly to Auckland and then straight over to Perth on Tuesday. Dan (son) will travel over with him,” confirmed Roberts, who added, “I’m rapt with his trap two draw for the final. That’s ideal for him.”

By winning the New Zealand Nationals final Dyna Dave also receives an exemption for the rich A$630,000 TAB Melbourne Cup heats meaning he’s now eligible to be drawn straight into one of the eight 515m heats that will be contested at Sandown Park on November 21. The winner of the Auckland GRC hosted Waterloo Cup will also receive a Melbourne Cup heat exemption.

Opawa Hilary confirmed her potential an exciting staying talent when she led her rivals all the way to deliver her bold $50,000 NZ Nationals Distance final over the 732m trip. The Dave and Jean Fahey mentored, Opawa Racing bred and owned stayer completed her 732m assignment in 43.49s.

“She keeps on going – improving all the time, getting better and better with each distance race. Her box speed is a big asset for her. I consider there’s more improvement (staying) in her. I’m thrilled for Opawa Racing to have won the right to represent New Zealand. It’s also rewarding for the team Ross, Toni, Mark, Jack, Anthony, Sarah and Jean at home. This is reflection and reward for the work they do,” commented Dave Fahey, who has since advised that Opawa Hilary will also fly to Perth with Dyna Dave on Tuesday. “We’re making plans now”.

“I’m not overly fussed with her trap eight draw in Perth, especially as I understand there’s a bit of early pace in the final field. I guess that makes it harder for her. She pulled up good from last night,” he also added.

“It’s wonderful to win the New Zealand final and it pleasing to do it (win) with a New Zealand bred greyhound. It will be an uphill task for her over there taking on those top Aussie stayers. We are really looking forward to the challenge and a first four finish would be great,” advised Robin Wales from Opawa Racing.
