Weslyn Demolishes Her NZ Stayers Cup Rivals

Empathic! That’s the best way of describing the effortless manner that the star Craig Roberts prepared stayer Dyna Weslyn dealt to her rivals in Friday’s $30,000 Christchurch Casino New Zealand Stayers Cup at the Addington Raceway. The hot $1.60 race favourite was in cruise control when the 42.65s 732m tack record holder led throughout to claim her second Group 1 staying title for the season by a comfortable 5.75 length margin.

It was game set and match for Dyna Weslyn from trap rise as she scampered clear from the five trap to seize the early race lead. It was a race lead that she was never going relinquish as seen by her quick 17.18s 295m split time. Her freewheeling, pace making tactics saw her greeting the judge after 43.13s of hard out chasing action.

It sure was race on for the minor portions of the stake which saw the Dave and Jean Fahey trained Opawa Hilary (who was a $51.50 win outsider) producing the race of her career when she gamely nailed the runner up prize. She had boldly led the vain chaser after the tear away pacemaker and in just her second outing over an extreme race distance she clung onto second by the barest possible margin. In doing so this Opawa Racing owned and bred daughter of Barcia Bale and Opawa Michelle was rewarded with the Breeders’ bonus payment that is paid to the first New Zealand bred greyhound to finish in this Group 1 event.

It was another Kiwi bred stayer who she held out as just that nose margin behind her in third was the current Addington 645m track record holder Perfect Result. He stoutly kicked on during the run home to secure his podium placing for his conditioner Ray Adcock.

“I was rapt to see Weslyn’s body in front of Opawa Hilary from the jump. When she went clear going into the first turn I thought you beauty – from there I knew she would put a gap on the others and I knew she had the race won with a lap to run.

“Weslyn is the complete racing package and I can say that she’s the best greyhound I have ever trained. She can run a phenomenal 520m time, then of course she’s super over the 700m plus trips. She travels brilliantly, you never hear from her – she’s the complete greyhound,” stated Roberts who advised about the immediate racing plans he has in store for her. “She’ll contest the Amazing Chase series, then she will be aimed towards the Nationals Distance series.”

“I also wish to acknowledge the help I get in the kennels from Angela (Washington – partner), plus Chris Milne and Pete Clausen,” added Roberts.

Friday’s NZ Stayers Cup win by Dyna Weslyn the 23rd of her career. She has placed on another seven occasions and her 39 race day outings has seen her stakes earning tally now standing at a tidy $150,272 for her Sydney based owner Brendon Wheeler.
