Melbourne Invitations Issued

The Melbourne based The Meadows Club has released their initial list of invitations for their three big ticket Group 1 races that will be held over the 525, 600m and 725m race distances on February 16.

Included in the list of invites for consideration of selection for the A$145,000 Temlee over 525m are two New Zealand trained greyhounds. The connections of the Craig Roberts trained Dyna Dave and Nature’s Gent from the Angela Turnwald kennels now have until tomorrow (Tuesday) to accept or decline their invitations. It is surprising to see Dyna Weslyn’s name missing from the A$110,000 Zoom Top invitations, especially after her easy recent pair of 725m wins on The Meadows track. The media release indicates the connections of 12 stayers have been sent invitations, although the names of just nine stayers has been listed in the release.

The final field selections will be announced during next Saturday’s The Meadows meeting where the box draw for the three features will be held. The three Invitation races kick starts the three week long TAB Australian Cup Carnival which boosts A$1.3 million in stake money, including the A$550,000 TAB Australian Cup (March 2).

‘We will give Nature’s Gent invitation consideration – we need to speak to the owing syndicate members before making a final decision,” advised Paul Freeman, who added. “We’re tickled pink that Nature’s Gent has been issued with an invitation. Age is against him, however the other factor we need to consider is the looming Auckland Cup series. I guess technically it is possible to race in both although obviously the travel factor and the dogs welfare has to be considered.

“He has won two of the three biggest 520m races in this country and it will be nice if he could add the third race ($90,000 Auckland Cup) to his list,” added Freeman about Nature’s Gent who has now won the last two Group races contested in New Zealand (Spion Rose and Hatrick Classic).

Roberts was more definite with his decision about Dyna Dave. “No we won’t be accepting the invitation. He has the Auckland Cup as his next major target. His lack of early pace will hurt him against those pacey dogs over there. It is great for him to be issued with an invitation.”
