CE Update - September 2018

Hi Everyone,

It’s been a long time coming but finally the Messara report is finally upon us. The report has been delivered to the Minister who has announced that its release will take place on Thursday 30 August at 6pm. This public meeting will be held at Claudelands Conference Centre in Hamilton, where Minister of Racing, Rt Hon Winston Peters will deliver a speech followed by a question and answer session from the floor. As soon as we are able we will relay the thinking and the recommendations to you, as well as our own initial assessment of what it may mean for greyhound racing in New Zealand.

We have also been getting around to clubs and talking to Licensed Persons (LPs) of late. I have heard from a lot of you about the need for more communication and the need for a practical approach to rule setting and welfare matters. We are listening, adapting, and trying to involve clubs and LPs more. We will be actively incorporating greater LP feedback into our decision-making (though sometimes we do have to move quickly) and we will be making sure that you get a chance to see us more often. I have appreciated the chance to speak with a number of clubs and members already, and we are looking at adding Otago and Waikato to the list of visited clubs as soon as possible. Ours is a great sport that can be made better; I’m excited about the opportunity to work with the industry and get ourselves positioned as a trusted and exciting part of the New Zealand sporting landscape.

Finally, please don’t forget our first-ever major industry conference. It will be held in Hamilton on 13 October, and it will be a great opportunity ahead of the Awards Dinner to share experiences, learn from industry experts and hear from the wider racing industry.
