Media Release: Amazing Chase 2018

Media Release 09/08/2018

The Amazing Chase held at Hatrick Raceway in Wanganui on Friday 27 August thrilled race attendees with its fresh, fast, fiercely competitive programme, while also raising over $4,500 for its 2018 charity partner, Jigsaw Whanganui. The second-ever running of the Amazing Chase turned out to be a superb event for all attendees.

The Amazing Chase is a unique greyhound racing event, in that it features only two dogs per ‘match race’. A total of eight of the country’s fastest greyhounds race in four of the head-to-head matches. The greyhound with the fastest time from all matches was named the winner. This year, the greyhound that took home the Amazing Chase winner’s title was Bigtime Paddy, trained by Lisa Cole.

Greyhound Racing New Zealand (GRNZ) and Wanganui Greyhound Racing Club (WGRC) partnered with Jigsaw Whanganui to provide the charity with a financial contribution through the Amazing Chase. The first $3,300 collected was raised through trainers making a $100 donation when nominating their dogs to take part in the race.

The Amazing Chase also offered the opportunity for event attendees to support Jigsaw Whanganui through a sweepstakes on the evening. Tickets were sold for a raffle prize which raised an additional $586 for the charity. Additionally, WGRC donated a percentage of the hospitality take from the evening and money was taken in on the evening during a raffle to benefit Jigsaw.

GRNZ and Wanganui Greyhound Racing Club recognised that the work Jigsaw Whanganui is doing to support families, enabling children to thrive, is critical to the local community and chose to support the charity while bringing the people of Wanganui together for the Amazing Chase.

GRNZ Chief Executive Mauro Barsi welcomed the involvement with Jigsaw Whanganui as the charity associated with the Amazing Chase. He reaffirmed that the charitable aspect of the Amazing Chase was a great opportunity for greyhound racing participants. “This is a real chance for our industry participants to give back to the community in a meaningful way," said Barsi.

Jigsaw Whanganui were equally excited about working with GRNZ and WGRC as it will increase their ability to reach Kiwi children and families in need. “The generous support provided by GRNZ and WGRC comes at a time when we have 20 frontline staff who have worked with 700+ families in the last year alone.

“Thanks to GRNZ we will be able to provide a number of these children and families facing various hardships with social workers and their support when they need it most,” said Jigsaw Whanganui Executive Officer, Tim Metcalfe.

Andrew Hansen, Manager of the Wanganui Greyhound Racing Club was proud of the result. “Our club hosted a sell-out crowd for the second-ever Amazing Chase. We had visitors from Australia and throughout New Zealand, more than $80,000 of stakes and unprecedented television coverage. It was great for both Club and community - Jigsaw is an excellent, family-focused charity to support.”
