Life Member Gerald Ryan

Gerald Ryan OMNZ, life member of Greyhound Racing NZ, passed away peacefully on 26 May 2018, aged 87.

Gerald, along with his brother Kevin, actively represented the then Greyhound Racing NZ Board during the days when the code was seeking totalizator status. It was a successful campaign by the lawyer brothers who worked closely with the late GRNZ Life Member and recently inducted GRNZ Hall of Fame member Sam Fletcher when preparing the legal submissions for the code’s application for totalizator racing.

It was Gerald who held discussions with the then Racing Minister Alan Highet who favoured the application as seen in the following quote from Sam Fletcher’s book “From Drag hare Paddock To Bramich Lure:

Highet felt himself in a strong position to talk turkey to the equine Conferences. His message to them was blunt and direct. “You’d better get used to it. The Government is moving towards granting totalisator licenses for greyhound racing,” he said.

Gerald also had an active involvement in the other greyhound club that was racing in Auckland at the time, the Awatea club. He also represented the code on the then NZ Racing Board.

Gerald’s big passion in sport was Rugby League which was a code where he strongly served in national administration at various levels for a long time.
