Deregistration of Greyhounds

You are required under GRNZ rules of racing (Rule 108) to advise GRNZ of the retirement of all greyhounds - that includes in event of euthansia, those going on to breed, and those who are continuing as a pet, either in your care or at another home. Please remember that if your greyhound is rehomed through a rehoming programme you still need to deregister them with GRNZ.

It is vital for the integrity of GRNZs welfare data to keep accurate records of greyhounds deregistered at every stage, from puppies through to retiring from racing. We are committed to ensuring transparency and accountability for all our greyhounds.

There is no cost to deregister your greyhound. Please note that we require notice within 14 days and a death certificate for any greyhounds that have been euthanised. We also require the new owner contact details for any greyhounds that have been rehomed.

You can deregister your greyhounds online through the member section of our website or download a copy of our current deregistration form here.

We are taking deregistrations seriously and as such in the new year all trainers will receive a letter as per the above advisory, and following that we will be calling trainers and owners of all greyhounds that are not deregistered to ascertain their status.

If you have any questions please feel free to call Mairi (Head of Welfare) on 04 589 4909 or 021 840 921, or Jo Finlay ( on 04 576 6295 (9am-2.30 Monday-Friday).
