Nothing Idol About NZRS Novice Win

The Opawa Racing team have a very exciting looking young chasing prospect representing them in the Central Districts region. It was a very stylish $7,340 NZRS Novice victory that Idol Tom produced for his trainer Marcie Flipp on Friday at the Hatrick Raceway – exceptionally stylish!

Idol Tom went into the final holding the quickest of the eight 520m heat times beside his name (30.34s). He got underway moderately from the four trap, settling in an early midfield position.

Taking up the pace making duties was Bigtime Forest for Lisa Cole. His kennel mate and litter brother Bigtime Tyson was in close attendance as was Dream Kay for Robin Wales. The northern Hayley Mullane prepared Wairoa Wolf was also handy, however he copped a first turn race ending check. Settling just in behind them was the Dave and Jean Fahey trained race favourite Opawa Rooster.

Idol Tom improved when racing down the back straight to stalk Bigtime Forest into and around the home bend. Entering the home straight we saw Idol Tom extending nicely which resulted in him taking control within the shadows of the post to claim his tidy one length victory for Opawa Racing and Tom Rodewald. This son of Fabregas and Idol Girl completed his assignment in 30.77s.

Bigtime Forrest was gallant in holding down second and this son of Collision and Pink Sock held the same margin over the strong finishing Opawa Rooster, who is a member of the talented Fabregas and Token Kay litter. There was another 1.25 lengths back to the fourth placed Bigtime Tyson.

For Opawa Racing it was yet another deserved breeding success with the long time racing partners and mates snaring the winning and third portions of the Breeders’ bonus payments attached to this NZRS final.

There are three litter members with the others being Idol Hot and Idol Alan, who are also trained by Marcie Flipp and are displaying promise. Opawa Racing boss Robin Wales explains, “They were really to race when we sent them up to Marcie. They went up there as we are placing a number of our dogs in different racing regions. Marcie is doing a super job with them. I wasn’t sure if Idol Tom would get the 520m distance, so it is exciting to watch what he is currently achieving.

“What makes me even more excited is the impact that Idol Girl’s sire Winsome Opawa is now having being a sire of brood bitches. I’m very happy with the litters that his daughters are now leaving. Opawa Andrea and Opawa Secret are leaving some handy puppies,” he advised.

That all adds up the Opawa Racing boys are going to be paid out a plenty more NZRS bonus dollars over the forthcoming years.
