Ashburton Cup Review

“Give me trap two & I’ll deliver!”

“Give me trap two any day boss,” would be the comment Letron James is likely to have said to his conditioner Craig Roberts after his effortless victory in Sunday’s $6,000 Connie Smallridge Memorial Ashburton Cup.

Letron James put the ultimate result out of the range of his rivals from trap rise when he blasted away from the Addington 520m two trap to dictate terms to his seven rivals. Into the first turn he held a margin over his rivals with the Bruce Dann prepared With Pride taking up the initial chase after him.

That chase was short-lived and it was then the C4 assessed greyhound Justin Ryan, who was facing his toughest career test in this event, who took up the chase behind the freewheeling pacemaker for his conditioners Steve and Bonnie Evans. Improving his field position down the back straight was Letron James’s kennelmate Allen Hadrian.

Turning in for the run to judge Peter Rosanowski it was all Letron James who cruised to his deserved feature race victory by a comfortable 3.75 length margin, clocking 30.43s. Allen Hadrian maintained his strong gallop which saw him claiming the runners’ up prize. The third Roberts’ trained runner in the event was the recently imported Aussie chaser Dyna Boomer. And he extended strongly over the later stages to nail third another 1.75 lengths behind and by doing so obviously provided Roberts’ with the $6,000 feature race training trifecta.

Letron James had been luckless, mainly owing to poor draws, in his previous major race assignments. This winner of 17 races and just under $67,000, which includes 12 minor placings from his 73 race day starts, will be hoping to draw the two trap again in the forthcoming South Island Champs series at Group 2 level.

By the way Letron James’s trap two record now reads at an impressive nine wins and one minor placing from the 14 occasions he has been sighted wearing the checks!
